Do some research. I wouldn't make the statement "I want a Mac because they are the best ones out there". That's not based on anything.

From a hardware perspective, "Macs" now use entirely 3rd party hardware...which can be bought individually and built yourself. Intel processors, ATI graphics, ASUS motherboards, standard DDR2 RAM, etc etc. Apple just makes the plastic casing and gives you their service plan. Just like every other PC manufacturer.

From a software perspective, OSX is very easy and rather fun to use. BUT, there's still a number of drawbacks if you're into gaming or specialty software. Because of this, Apple has released BootCamp, which lets you run Windows on your "Mac" as the default operating system...which makes your "Mac" a 110% Wintel PC.

Apple's advertising team is very very smart. They take their product, which is exactly the same as a computer with the same hardware by another assembling company, and make us think it's different. The first thing the commercials say is "I'm a PC. I'm a Mac"...which immediately creates the thought that there is a clear difference between the two...(but there's not). And that's what sells. Nothing makes money better than extreme consumer polarization.

Advantages of a Desktop Computer

So if you want to use a computer for personal use than the desktop computer is a great one to have at home. Desktop computers do have more power than a laptop computer does. The desktop computer is very complicated with many cords to have to deal with. A desktop isn't very portable. The desktop computer is hard to move from room to room. Advantages of a Laptop Computer

The laptop computer is more portable. You can take a laptop with you every day on vacations and many other places. You can use a laptop computer with a battery if you forget the power cord. I can't say which one is better, since both have their pro's and con's, but people choose one over the other for few reasons.

1) Portability
A lot of people nowadays need to have portability for their criteria, hence laptops are purchased for their daily needs, but remember that when portability comes in play, lots of hardware limitations are imposed on the laptop for their portability. Portable laptops are usually lower in their hardware specifications, with lots of other limitation to reduce the weight. If you always on the move while needing to access your computer, then laptop will be a better choice.

2) Costs.
This is another criteria which a lot of people consider. Remember that portability comes at a cost and the smaller electronic equipments are, the more expensive it is. For similar specfication for a PC and laptop, laptop is comparably much more expensive than PC.

3) Future Upgrades.
Another criteria which quite a few people consider. Remember that when you buy a PC, especially DIY type, you have lots of flexibility when you want to upgrade to a better system. In the end, the parts are all independent of each other and as a result, you can take out the parts from your old PC and still uses in on a new PC with better specifications. For laptops, the only 2 things that you can upgrade are RAM and capacity of your hard disk, but that comes at a higher cost and usually, it is not worth the purchase.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As for Mac, they are NOT the best, but I can say the same thing for PC. What I am trying to say when they say "PC is the best" or "Mac is the best", don't trust them.

Each system is only good for certain group of people who need specific needs for their PC. I have an acquaintance who are tricked into buying Mac because he heard that it is the best system, but turns out stressed because some of the application that he needs to run on PC are not able to be run on his Mac.

Rather than saying that which particular system is the best, first thing that you need to ask yourself is what you need your system to do. If you use your system only to surf internet, do your spreadsheet, compiling documents, then you can get either one of them as both are good in handling the tasks above. If you have the need to install some games for your system, PC is totally recommended as in the market now, not a lot of games appears for Mac. Most of them were made only for PC system. If you need the system to work on graphics designing, animation and other multimedia oriented processing, then Mac would be a better choice than PC.

Another criteria that you may want to consider is your comfort in using software. If you are used to PC-based softwares, then I suggest you stick to PC-based systems. If you want to explore new things with lots of time to do it, then go for Mac. Remember that in using Mac, you are handling a completely different system and therefore, you need to learn more about it. If you are not confident, then stick to PC-based system.

Hope I did not confuse you =)

I'm definately going for a laptop.
They're so much lighter & take up less space.

I'm getting a Macbook around Christmas, too.

You should do some research before you decide, though.

computers tend to be more powerful for it's price compared to a laptop's price, but laptops are easier to carry around. (Cause it sucks carrying a monitor everywhere)

Of course, laptops are easier to steal, while people who break into your house tend to skip the computer if it has too many wires.

Well, it's just a matter of personal preference, really. If you want mobility, get a notebook. If you have the money, I suggest the MacBook Pro. I love mine.
