I would like to see high speed rail connecting all the midsize and large cities in the USA so we could travel without driving or flying, plus if you have seen maglev you will understand, it can go from 0 to 300mph in a few minutes and back to 0 in the same time and it is smooth, no jostling. I just think it would be awesome to zip to anywhere and not have to fly. Also there is a new system being tested that use's a maglev train inside a vacuum tube system and the speeds are unreal, I believe they said 18 minutes from New Orleans to Chicago, fast huh.

Im not talking about a Amtrak system, Amtrak is laid out badly, we can you catch a train , nowhere around here. And yes the numbers I quoted for New Orleans to Chicago are correct, they are saying 3000 mph, you are in a vacuum system inside of a tube and it will be very fast, I think the company developing it is called Swissrail.

I would like to see a high speed rail system between my house, and my office, 12 miles away.
From home to the office in 3 minutes. Now THAT'S public transportation I'd use.

High speed rail is awesome. The shinkansen in japan makes travel to any place inside of 300 miles incredibly easy. cuts it down to 3 hours.
The problem is that in the early 1900's the infrastructure was in place to have a larger working commuter rail system, but then car companies bought it up. so guess what happened.
The best part about a train is that it changes how you pack. so you can avoid heavy security and get to your train faster.
And the new orleans to chicago, not 18 minutes my friend. if you are talking about a 800 mile trip, the train would have to go2400 mph to make that trip in 20 minutes. I think you need to think more like 4-5 hours.

At one time there were trains all over the country, but the people fell in love with driving their own cars. Perhaps if fuel gets much higher the same people will wake up to the fact that we need a system of transportation that requires less fuel, is less harmful to nature & still provides a decent way to travel with less hassel than driving, we will someday have a modern nation once again. Darn, I'm gonna miss it, I'm too old to be around when this happens. Oh, well, I did get to ride the rails in the old days!

Sure, but there hasn't been a profit in passenger rail in over half a century, so that leaves gov't to build / operate it. And as we all know, government can never get anything right.
The feds spent over 1 billion dollars to electrify and upgrade the Boston to NYC (Acela Express) route which shaved exactly 1/2 hour off the time the privately owned New Haven RR ran that route in 1950! And people still prefer to fly.
Sorry, but enough of my tax dollars have been wasted on Amtrak in the last 35 years. Enough is enough!

We need it. Amtrack got it started long ago, but
between lousey maintenance and evil ones who
damaged the tracks, resulting in train derailments,
people became afraid to take the Amtrack and so
it has since been a failure. Maybe we need rail
transportation similar to the Monorail at Disney??
We certainly need to get more cars and trucks off
the highways and interstates, and high-speed rail
transportation would be the answer. Traveling by air
is the pitts right now (delays and lost luggage included).

It won't happen for the same reason there are no trains here in the U.S.A. now.
Unions.
The government will no longer allow unions to shut down the entire nation and the economy to extort higher wages for themselves.
That is why the railroads were shut down in the first place.
The truckers won't go on strikes that will cripple the entire country so they got the highways, the railroads got ZIP!
If you were alive in the 1950's you would know how the railroads hurt everyone.

If we hadn't diverted half a trillion taxpayer dollars to Halliburton et al, we could have the best high speed rail system in the world. LA to New York in six or eight hours is less time than flying when you include the airports.
