It is true to some extent. Virus programmers usually aim to write a virus that can spread to and infect as many computers as possible. Macs constitute a very small percentange (between 3-7% depending on the source) of the total computers so virus programmers usually don't bother writing a virus that can infect only such a small # of computers; therefore there are fewer Mac viruses out there than there are PC viruses and Macs have less related problems

Yes, it's completely true.

Some people will say that it's possible or that the Mac's "low market share" makes it an unlikely target. The truth is, Mac OS X is based on Unix, a very secure operating system. Most of the types of attacks that wreak havoc on Windows machines can't even happen on a Macintosh. A properly secured Macintosh is all but impossible to crack.

All I know is this... I've been using a Mac for a few years now and I've never had a single piece of malware. That's all that counts.

Here's the article about all of the malware and vulnerabilities that supposedly don't exist in OSX.

Apple doesn't advertise "No viruses on a Mac". They say: "114,000 viruses? Not on a Mac.". They say there aren't 114000 viruses...but there are viruses. And they're growing at a MUCH FASTER RATE than those for Windows.

Having a UNIX BSD base, OSX is a far more stable and secure system, and not prone to viruses.

And for those who still insist on quoting that tired old myth about market share and viruses: UNIX varients are the most widely used operating systems outside the home, yet they suffer none of what windows suffers.

they can, but generally don't. it's usually not worth the time for someone to create a virus for a mac since there are less mac users.
