It can be messy, but there is nothing unhealthy about it. Current research even shows that if you have sex while on your period it can relieve a great deal of the cramping. Whether you choose to do it or not is really just a question of preference.
Also Sara J above needs to take a lesson in basic human biology. The reason that your are having your period is because your body is flushing the unfertilized egg out of your system, therefore, where it is not impossible to get pregnant on your period, it is very, very unlikely. The time when you are most likely to get pregnant is during ovulation. During menstration the chance of getting pregnant is the lowest.

Nothing more than grossing your partner (and possibly yourself) out. My husband refuses to have sex with me while I'm on my period. The site of the blood on his you know what freaks him out. Can't say I blame him though, it is sort of disturbing, even if it's natural.
If you do decide to have sex while on your period, have a towel under you to prevent any messes.

The guy gets a red--well you know what I'm getting at. nothing. Personally it can be quite stimulating if you're not bleeding too heavy. That's just icky.

You can wait for your period to end. and nothing happens its just like you had a period without having sex.
