Not at all. If a commitment is made, it doesn't rely on a legal document. Society's pressures for that "piece of paper" are diminishing, & there is good reason for this. The divorce rate is high; WHERE was the committment? On the paper? In the heart? Everyone suffers in divorce. Attorney's fees, children, custody battles, child support. Love & marriage have literally nothing to do with one another. In fact, the document itself can "impose" on people a responsibility that is not felt in the heart. One never knows, until actually living with someone, if it will "work" or not. If unmarried people decide to break the relationship, there's not the kind of petty: "This is MY table! This is my widescreen! I put the down payment on your car! Half of yours is half of mine!" What nonsence. For people who truly love each other, this "document," or these "vows" mean nothing. It is nothing more than a contract on paper. I have found the most long lasting relationships have been based on love, not paper. Marriage is becoming rather archaic. Often, people who feel insecure, mistakenly feel secure by this "official" ritual. I know a gay couple who have sustained a beautiful relationship for over twenty years. Even if it were "legal" to marry in their State, I doubt very much that it would matter to them. NO. Love & marriage are NOT like a horse & carriage, as the old song goes.
Also, people who are not married, but love each other sincerely, do NOT flit from one lover to another, any more than married ccouples do.

I will assume you mean Humans. As some animals can formed long lasting love bonds too.

A marriage must have solid foundations if it is to last and be satisfying. Otherwise, the stress experienced after the wedding can be much greater than the stress before it. Marriage is a commitment--those who are not true to their commitments should not marry in my view.
Some have had marriages that were arranged in this world-that you could call successful without long lasting love (but not totally satisfying) Commitment to one does bring a unique feeling that throughout time it has continues to be a sought for goal and treasured by many. So yes , it is "very important" if you desire both success and satisfaction in your love life-people love a special bond--seems few things have been able to replace the joy found by those who have found a true commitment to it.. and are enjoying what so many seek.

There is another side--I might have long lasting love for a family member or a special person who I do not accept as a mate but "never the less" will love with all my heart in a different way.

I believe that the question is the wrong way round, it should be 'How important is LONG LASTING LOVE to MARRIAGE?'. In such a case the answer would be it is one of the few thing important to it.

Marriage, before it became a legal and fincial institution, was the symbol by which the world knew that the two people bound by the bonds of marriage were in love and had great love for each other. Marriage today is nothign more than a legal binding of two estates.

Hope this helps.

I can only answer that for myself, for me it is not that important. I have been with my guy for over 12 yrs and still counting, we love each other very much and are not married. We don't have any plans on getting married as we are happy just the way we are so we really don't feel the need for it. To me, if we respect one anothers beliefs, values, etc. and share our selves with each other honestly and openly, give and take and have this deep connection then how will marriage change it, i don't see it. We have alot of people tell us that we must get married to love each other and be happy, we are already there and we are not married not that I have anything against it but what we are doing works for us and that is all that matters. If a person believes that they should get married than so be it, it's their choice all I know is I choose what is right for me. I love my guy and so far it's been long lasting and I think it will continue to last. We are happy and love each other as much as we did when we first met, actually it is more now, the bond between us has grew over the yrs.

It's not really necessary. For some couples, it may offer a sense of comfort, and that's completely fine. Good for them.

However, most marriages I've seen have ended on a bad note, and relatively early too. Also, just look at the divorce rate in the U.S.

Actually, the strongest relationship that I have ever seen in two people is that of my boyfriend's parents - and they're not married. They've been together for 25 years and are still very happy with each other.

My opinion on the security marriage provides is different from most of the people who answered on this. I think that in some cases, many people stop trying once they're married. I mean, they already committed to the other person, so why put any effort into keeping the relationship going? The commitment provides a safety blanket. I might be wrong, and certainly there would be exceptions, but I think that people stop trying once they're married, as that's what I've seen in most marriages.

You don't have to be married to love someone. As someone else pointed out, marriage is really just a piece of paper. And I for one certainly don't feel the need to declare my love for someone in front of a judge. I already know that I love my boyfriend, and I know that he loves me. That's all we really need.

Long lasting love is something that certainly can happen without marriage, however, when two people make a commitment to the ideals and ideas of marriage it lays a foundation of truth and that truth being that these two people understand that all civilization are bond together through the unseen and seen pillars of iron. The pillars of all time and all peoples to see and experience.

Marriage is a statement in the eyes of those that part take of it and those that witness it from the beginning to the end that there are things here on earth as there are in the heavens above that are eternal in their concepts and that even mere mortals can obtain and sustain the words and faith that they have in each other's love and that of the marriage itself. Binding lasting concepts for the two, the family and those who look upon them. And as the years progress and the marriage remains in tack, the truth of man's spark of spirituality is aflame for all to see, experience and rejoice in.

Marriage is the prove of lasting love for ALL not just the dream of if. That there truly are scared moments, words and times that can be upheld. That Love is Eternal.

Traditionally, marriage was a legal contract which bound together two people for the financial and political gain of themselves and their families. Marriage created dynasties. Power bases were consolidated and men who were not born "first" were able to gain financial status to go along with their titles. They were not love matches.

While it is true that unconditional love will last regardless of a mutual commitment being made or not, I believe that marriage is a very important way that two people have of saying, each to the other, I will always be with you . Among many things, it says "I will struggle and fight and persevere because I am committed to being with you, loving you, respecting you, cherishing the unique beauty of you, until my life ends". It's an amazingly beautiful thing. It says, in a way that nothing else does, that you are worth it. You are so valuable to another person that they will commit to whatever it takes, even a legal document - for you. In today's world, "marriage" has become just another byword. It is often entered into lightly and therefor ended lightly. In this sense, it is easy to see why so many view it as just another piece of paper or a legal contract of not much value. This, of course, is because it is not fully understood what a real marriage is. Marriage is not something you practice, not something you enter into thinking, well, if it doesn't make me happy I will just end it. A real marriage, the only true sense of marriage, is a lifetime commitment of all of one's resources, emotional, spiritual, and physical to one other person. In this sense, marriage is both essential and non-essential to LIFE Lasting Love. Long lasting, while equipped with a stronger battery, is still finite. Marriage requires everlasting.

If Love still thrives long after you are married, then it is long lasting love. Marriage can be an obstacle or let's say at least a challenge to love, but if you don't risk it, you may never know how long lasting and fulfilling it can be. There's something a little silly about people who are jumping from one lover to the next once they reach their 40s. If you love someone, you want to build a future together. Still, there's no guarantee it's all going to be smooth sailing.

marriage is hierarchic, the man and the women have certain roles. As Human race evolves we can see that marriage is just a physical plane in the uneverse and cant be classified as love but more as commitment. Commitment doesn't mean wholesome long lasting love. The Conenctions of two souls helping each other grow is long lasting love. You have to be free of fear, temptation and anger: marriage easily encourages these 3.

It's just a question of importance..

Really important. If there were no complication as marriage, people wouldn't even bother resolving the conflicts. They just simply separate. You should learn conflict resolution and be able to handle difficulty. There is no legal bond when you are having a long lasting affair. That makes people have no commitment. If you want your love to last for eternity, especially to somebody you are sure about, you should be able to handle the differences. Those differences make you separate and also make you adore each other.
