1) Are people there un-accepting, and unfriendly toward foreigners? / Are citizens "cold" and "rigid?" I'm sure some people are, but in my experience, no. In bigger cities, people tend to be less friendly, but there are still LOTS of people out there which want to make friends, foreign or not. 2) Is missing a day of work in Japan considered "A small act of Treason"? I've seen that attitude in the English schools (big fines for missing days, etc), but not really in my employment outside them. 3) Are foreigners often "isolated" from everyone else? If they don't make any attempt to make Japanese friends, then yes. If they try to make Japanese friends, no. Honestly, I felt more isolated living in New Zealand than I do Japan. 4) What do people in Japan enjoy doing for fun? Depends on the person. Some students will have a party, normally at a bar, but sometimes at home. A lot of people will go shopping, or just hang out with their family. 5) How do people in Japan heat their homes? Kerosene heaters normally (one right beside me now). Central heating is pretty unheard of. 6) Do people there snub you if you can't speak Japanese / if you can't speak it well? Try even a little bit and you'll get sick of hearing "Nihongo jouzu desu ne?!" from people incredulous that you can say "arigato" 7) Has traditional Japanese culture "died"? To some extent, yes. But you don't see many cowboys in America either. There's still a lot of history and tradition, but you have to know where to look for the best places. Japanese are keen to protect their history.
