Actually I think it adds up to about 9 gallons due to the rocks etc that you need to put in. It would seem obvious that you would use 10 for a 10 gallon tank but it really ends up less.

It depends where you are!

In the US a 10 US gallon tank would hold 37.85411784 litres of water and in the rest of the world a 10 Imperial gallon tank would hold 45.4609 litres.

I reckon that it should be a little OVER 10 gallons due to the weight of the water distorting the sides and base of the tank outwards and therefore increasing the available capacity of said tank.

The amount of volume increase would depend on the elasticity and thickness of the tank material used. Eg Thick and reinforced steel = almost no increase; thin and un-reinforced copper = a lot more stretching.

Just a little less than ten gallons because you leave some space at the top for the fishies to jump around without hitting the lid.

After extensive research and complicated volumetric computations I have deduced that the answer to the question is an integer between 9 and 11 gallons of water. Good grief.
