I'm 14 and on a summer swim team. I have a meet soon and I'm going to be swimming 50 meter freestyle 50 meter breast stroke, and a 100 meter IM. I need help with the IM or all the strokes really.I need to know what I can do so that I don't get so tired and I can become quicker so that I come in first or close to first. I'm okay I just would like to be better. My time for freestyle is like 42 seconds and my time for breast stroke is like 1 minute. I don't however have a time for an IM yet this year.

I have been swimming for a over 10 years now so I think i can help you. The first thing i can say is to just stay relaxed on the IM, dont try to muscle your way through the butterfly because then it will just tire you out. On the backstroke if u are good at it and not so good at butterfly try to redeem yourself on the backstroke, and im thinking you might be a breastroker because you are gonna be swimming it, so put most of your effort into the breastroke if that is what your best at, and as for the last lap (freestyle) use whatever energy you have left because it is the last lap. As far as doing the 50's, just sprint because it is not a long distance at all.

You have to train and prepare yourself during practice in order to race better. There's no specific drill or advice that can be given to change your race-day performance and you should never tyr anythign new on race day. Approach your coach and tell him or her how you feel and that you want to be better. Push yourself harder in practice, drill yourself to death and MAKE yourself faster. Kepp on your coach for tips, advice and technique improvements, only those who are there when you swim can make suggestions about your specific style and stroke needs.

Training is pivitol to racing and improvement. If you are not training and preparing properly you will not improve, it's that easy. A healthy diet that coincides with your training plan should also be part of your daily routine. If your coach hasn't given you dietary guidelines, ask for them. Your nutrition can make or break your training. Also, ensure you are tapering properly and not slacking off. Follow your coach's advice and if you feel you are not being trained to your potential, talk to your coach. If your team isn't offering the opportunities you seek, find another team that does.

Good luck!

I would talk with your coach to see what you could work on better. Practice takes time, and by more and more practice, with critiquing from your coach you will become better, and get your times down. Make sure to bring snacks with you to your meet, and snack in between your events, but make sure that you don't stuff yourself too full and get sick. Make sure to drink plenty of water, and get a good night's sleep the night before the meet, and just swim your best. It's hard to really give you any tips that are going to just immediately take time off of your swim...just try your best, and keep practicing!
