Burying the trash maybe very bad for the environment, but burning the trash would be much worse. Sending the trash into space isn't cost effective at all... well anyways burying the trash does the least amount of damage to the environment for a reasonable amount of money.

If it wasnt for buried trash I wouldnt be going snowboarding every winter in the city.

it costs money to buy fuel to burn it. it costs money to transport it anywhere (out to sea, into space, out to the country to leave in the open).
sadly no one can get a vote to pass showing people are willing to pay higher municiple taxes to do anything else with it.
