lithiumdeuteride is essentially correct. Predicting moon phases, longest and shortest days, and other *astronomical* phenomena are all possible through *observation*. Remember, these are *astronomical* events, and the reason they were predicted with such accuracy in ancient times is that *people had seen them happen before*!!!!
Consider the situation and abilities of the ancients. If you're interested in the moon, pretty soon you're going to realize that it moves through it's phases about every 30 days. If you're *really* interested in the moon, pretty soon you're going to realize it moves through it's phases every 29 and one-half days. It's not a difficult prediction to make, after that.
Likewise, if you're really interested when the shortest day of the year is (for instance, if you want to know whether or not you will survive the winter), you're probably going to notice a particular shadow getting longer and longer as the days get shorter and shorter. Soon, you'll be able to pick out the shortest day. If your ancient civilization has learned how to count numbers as large as 365, you will, in a matter of years, learn *exactly* how many days are in a year, and you will be able to predict *exactly* when the shortest and longest days are.
I'm willing to bet that no individual ancient Native American had seen at least two ends of the world before. If you think about it, you have to see *at least* two occurrences of an astronomical event to be able to predict the third (unless you know about gravity and mass and all sorts of sciency things other than how to count). Like us, they simply did not have the knowledge necessary to make such a prediction without observing an identical periodic occurrence.
Of course, the world *could* end in 2012. But trust me, the ancient Americans had no way of predicting such a thing.

The US Tax Code says that only in the year 2011 people can die and leave their entire estate to benefactors without any taxation. Don't you think maybe the government knows something we don't? Why would they pass up collecting taxes in the year 2011? Moreover, the government knows it can't pay for social security or medical care after 2012, so, again, the evidence shows that it's expected that the world will come to an end. What more proof do you need?

Predicting the longest day of the year and when the moon will appear full are trivial tasks.
However, there is nothing to suggest the world will "end", whatever that means.
Does "end" mean disappear? Physics says that's impossible.
Does "end" mean explode? What would cause such an explosion?
Does "end" mean get destroyed by a higher power? What evidence is there for this, beyond a book of fairy tales written by humans?

If the Mayans are so smart why did they get wiped out by the Spanish? Didn't their "amazing powers" show them the Spanish were sailing over to take all their gold?
Most of the 2012 prediction is a load of fantasy piled onto relatively minor astrological events.

December 21, 2012 is the supposed end of the Mayan Calender. Nostrodamus said the end was supposed to come in July 1999. Obviously, it didn't. We are not predestined to do anything. We have freewill, and can make our own future.

Well, with the proximity of asteroid fragments near to Earth, the "end" as we know it may occur at any time. However, I'm not going to worry about the end; just live and enjoy my life.
