I don't want to discourage you or, put you down but, if you have to ask, you have a problem.
To start with: do you have experiences?
Second: what type and kind, of tools do you have.
Third: do you have the cash for materials, some people will not pay up front due to being taken by previous contractors.
Four: Your going to need contacts, these are the most precious people you can get to know.
Go to all the Real-Estate dealers in your area. Make up a resume of your talents, your experiences, what you have in mind, your objectives.

I did all this with four paint brushes, a pliers and a hammer, I also had a "Phillips and a blade" screw driver. I hunted down each and every Real-Estate agent down in the city until they knew me by name. I finally started getting chances to bid on jobs. I worked for nothing on some to get a foot in the door.

When I retired twenty years later, I worked for the top agents in the city. One paid for me to relocate with him, gave me a very nice condo to live in and, a credit card for all the materials I needed and, I worked without receipts for him, we had a trust.
When I retired I made in excess of 125 a year.

You have to have talent, experience, tools and material, contacts and perseverance, determination and honesty.

If you have experience, search throughout the city, drive around and see whos working where, ask them for work, do anything, be a gopher ( go-for) to get in. Some contractors appreciate people like this and give them a chance, I did.

You don't mention if you are willing to move, but New Orleans and the Gulf South region are desperate for your kind of help. You could set up a business here in no time. People are still rebuilding and repairing after Hurricane Katrina...and will be doing so for years. Many people are up to the point, now, of needing painters and repairmen in their rebuilding efforts. Good luck.

Check with local contractors that may need help. Have a Social Security card and other State ID ready to show when you apply.

Place an ad in the newspaper. Be prepared to present references and explain your experience. Also, many homeowners want you to do the work and they will reimburse you for your expenses and pay you when the work is complete. Don't be alarmed, this is only because there are so many scam artists and the homeowners want to protect themselves from this.
