Can the flat segmented bar that joins into the slot in the lock be replaced by a locksmith or do I have to buy a new lock as the bar is too short.

I doubt if you can buy the bar as a separate item. I suppose you could make your own (bit of steel with a hole drilled for the locating pin), but removing the steel circlip which holds the lock barrel to the body, to get at the pin, would be a pain - it obviously isn't meant to be removed.. As others have said, you can buy a new body/barrel with keys to match (you don't have to buy the knob/handle mechanism which fits on the inside of the door). Or, if you are friendly with your local garage, get them to weld an extension on to the existing bar.
Incidentally, the bar on the standard version sticks out about 47mm from the back of the barrel and its end is 73mm from the back of the brass disc which surrounds the keyhole. So, if your door is more than about 63mm thick, there won't be enough of the bar projecting on the inside - you will need the odd 10 mm to engage with the slot in the knob/handle end.

Yes it can be replaced. Most good locksmiths that are worth their salt have parts like this in stock or in some type of inventory( a bone pile).
Let him(her) change it for you though. They have the right tools and knowledge to do this quickly and correctly without ruining the lock.
Oh and by the way, keep the old shaft for reference so you don`t make the same mistake twice.

It can be replaced but you may either have to order it online or from the locksmith. It is sometimes cheaper to buy a new lockset. Dont be afdraid to explore the hardware section at your favorite hardware store, you might find something that will work as good as new for pennies.
Good Luck!

You have to buy a new lock but they usually supply the whole centre piece separately from the body.

Is that button on the left side of the lock pushed down? That keeps the knob from turning. Try holding the button up, while turning the knob. If that's not the problem, the lock will have to be replaced.

It is possible to buy JUST the front part complete with 3 or 4 keys, in fact I found it was cheaper to buy this item, than to buy just the spare keys !!!!
