I love that movie, but i know is not for everyone, i know two possible explanations for the film
1)Just like in Mulholland Drive (another Lynch film) there are two stories, that happen simultaneously, the "real one" and the "one in their heads"... in this case, a guy kills his wife because shes unfaithful, and looses his mind, and what you see is all that process, but you also see the facts disturb with the imagination of a troubled mind, that's trying to cope with that terrible act. For example he sees a picture with to women, both his wife... that means (for some) the wife he knew and "the other" with the parallel life.
2) the other interpretation (far less popular) is based on a line that speaks the weird man (Robert Blake) that gos something like: when a man is sentence to death he doesn't know when is going to be killed, until suddenly someone shoots him (i cant remember exactly but you get the idea) so basically the mafia guy is sentenced to death because all of his wrong doings and everything happens to have him killed at the end.
hope it helps

Welcome to the legions of people who were confused by Lost Highway. :-)

David Lynch is a great director, with a unique eye and voice.
His movies are not for everyone. It seems to me that he likes to explore the area between the conscious and subconscious; between the waking world and the dream world. I think his movies are an acquired taste...watch Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Dr...notice I'm skipping Wild at Heart..I didn't like that one. Get used to not knowing what the heck is going on...just enjoy the ride.

This is by far the dumbest movie I have ever watched. You did not understand because there was nothing to understand. The man killed his girlfriend and lost his mind.

Sorry that you lost 2 hours of your life that you will never get back.

David Lynch, like some other filmmakers and songwriters for that matter, often likes the audience to decide what it means to them.
