I know a guy that went to prison for 7 years for having sex with one of his classmates. This did not happen in the 1960's and 1970's. While maybe it was wrong the punishment is too severe as this kid was still in high school.

And they have to register as sex offenders for the rest of their life, and maybe even be desginated as a sexual predator even though they were normal 18 year old kids.

Look I'm not saying it is ok for a 23 year old to be with anyone still in high school and they would deserve the 7 year prison sentence, but a kid still in high school having sex with another kid in high school.

I remember when I was 18, I only a adult legally not mentally.

I myself have never done it, but due to the law in my home state.

What about a 16 year old getting juvenile detention for having sex with a 15 year old.

Some states have enacted laws to help alleviate some problems with statutory rape laws. (18 and 15 is too big a gap, the mental development in those years is huge)

One, I think Georgia has, states as long as the two people are no more than 2 years apart, it is not statutory rape.

There is a case in Georgia right now, where a man, who was 17 received oral sex from a 15 year old, and was sentenced to 10 years. He has been in jail for a few years, and the law was changed because of him, but not set to be retroactive, so he is still there. The ironic thing is, if he had intercourse, he would not have broken a law. I have no idea why he has not recieved a commutation or pardon from the governor.

your very wrong. a 15 year old is a minor and still a child. At 18 your supposed to not only be an adult, but act like one. There is no excuse for an 18 year old to have sex with a 15 year old. It's wrong both legally and morally. He deserves the 7 years and more, be glad it didn't happen in Idaho, he would have gotten life, and that's no joke.

why would the girl want to do that to her mother when her mother is trying to protect her. the 15 year old was wrong in the first place to have sex with him, and yes the guy is considered a man at the age of 18. and he knew better even if the girl was willing. he should have resisted her even though she was willing to do this. and the mother is in her right to press charges against him. and the way that you sound the girl knew better too. and why would the girl side with the man against her mother? her mother was there with her before she ever heard of this guy. and when this guy walks away the mother will still be there with the daughter. suppose she gets pregnant for this guy and he walks away who is going to help this girl with the baby? because he did what he wanted to do and now he is gone. so what now....? yeah i know they had protection. so what, suppose the so-call protection didn't work, the girl was still too young for him to have sex will her. three years may not sound like it makes a difference but in experience it does. she don't know where he has been or what he has done in the three years that he has on the girl. a lot can happen to a guy his age in three years. the girl needs to wise up, and think more about getting an education than trying to get her mother put in jail for looking out for her.

Yes, she is a minor, he is an adult - h e l l o ! Who knows this might not be the first time he did this which is why he got 7 years.

I don't know where you live or what the laws are, but any time an adult has sex with a minor it is and should be serious business.

Was he unable to find someone willing his own age? Maybe in the 7 years he will grow up and become much more responsible for his actions!

Go Law Enforcement!!!

The law states that a person under 18 years of age can not
have consensual sex. That means by law, she can not give
her concent to have sex. Most 18 year old people know this.
The 18 year old commited a crime, so now he is doing his
time.I agree the seven years is a high price to pay, but it
also serves as a deterrent for others to think before they act.
If you were the girl or her parent, would you feel the same?

Does not matter one bit if the 18 year old is still in high school. At the age of 18 one is legally considered an adult, at the age of 15 one is considered a minor. Sex with a minor lands you in jail and rightfully so. It's just how it is. Get over it.

That's the state of the law at the moment. It's certainly no secret either, so ignorance is no excuse. That said, placing the age of majority at 18 is totally arbitrary. It hasn't always been so, nor do I believe it will necessarily stay there for all time.

The law doesn't always make sense.

I've read about similar cases. He broke the law. He was over 18 and legally an adult.

If you don't like the laws, get them changed.

Rape is the crime of engaging in sexual intercourse without the consent of partner.

Those under the age of majority cannot give consent to sexual intercourse.

It's that simple. People have gone to jail for this for a long time.

This law must be changed. I have seen too many people cry "rape" when the younger participant becomes angry with the older partner or when an angry parent discovers his child is having sex and he disapproves. These scenarios are not rape.
