The main pro arguments is that it raises public awareness about animals, endangered or not. If people, especially at a young age, learn to respect other species and even think they're cool, then the people might be prone to help protect them in the wild.

Zoos CAN be important in helping to conserve natural populations (collections of individuals of one species in a certain area). For example, if the gene pool is shrinking in a natural population, a zoo can supplement that pool by lending an animal to breed. This brings new genes into the population; the addition of new genes helps protect a population from inbreeding and provides a greater source of variation with which the species can respond to changes in the environment.

Having zoos is kind of like hedging your bets. If a natural population gets wiped out, we have a few individuals left in captivity that can reproduce. True, they usually don't fare well in captivity and may not be adjusted for survival in nature. However, we can slowly reintroduce such animals and teach them survival skills. Even if we have no current solutions for endangered species, genetics is rapidly improving and we may be able to help these species in the near future.

The only problem with zoos is in the care and upkeep of the animals and the park. Animals should be comfortable, have enough space as required by species, be given adequate food, not be mistreated or abused by keepers or visitors, and have a clean environment (including atmospheric and noise pollution).

Zoos are excellent places for schoolchildren to visit. Ever seen kids at a shark tank or watching a leopard? They get ecstatic. That's a beautiful thing, since it may lead to some of those kids one day working to preserve nature and all her organisms.

There are lots of good sides to this one.

You could take the 'against' zoo tack...zoos are bad because they exploit animals for the entertainment of humans; they create a false sense of security of the environment; they can be poorly run so that the animals are abused; that caging up animals is cruel...etc...

Or you could be a zoo supporter and say...zoos preserve species diversity; zoos promote learning about the natural environment; zoos collect genetic information for future generations; zoos provide safe habitats for endangered species or species facing habitat destruction..yadda yadda...

Unfortunately, man is destroying many animal's habitat. To preserve them, we need safe and realistic places for them to be. A zoo is not always a good thing. I have seen animals in horrible surroundings. I to, in great places to live.

Why are people so cruel to the animals in a zoo?
I don't like to be teased, why would I tease an animal?
Animals are living breathing creatures, too!!!
People act like complete idiots.

some zoos are godd. they give the animals very large room to roam. others don't do so well. the ones with cages are what i'm talking about! they do have advantages, but it depends on the zoo. in my opinion, central park zoo is ok on size, bronx zoo is a little worse for some animals and miami metro zoo is the best. for most of the animals

no they should not be abolished. They provide entertainment for people of all ages. They provide the animals with a safe environment to live in so they are protected from poachers. Without zoos many animals would have no stable home and no place to go. There are not many places for them to just run wild.

Pros: Protects endangered species, provides safe environment, ensuring security and feeding.

Cons: animals do not usually do well in captivity, some places may treat animals poorly as opposed to being free in natural habitat.
