"What is your opinion? Do they even do any good? MAYBE for "professional" bike racers, etc., but for adults in general, I just want to knock them off peoples' heads. I can understand maybe for kids (but even then I find them ridiculous), but, man the helmets, the outfits, etc. "Back in the day" we rode our bikes, and if we fell, we scraped our hands, elbows, knees, etc., and rarely did we hit our heads. We had enough sense to throw our limbs out if we fell in order to absorb the impact. I know I sound like an old fuddy-duddy, but really, do people even need them?"

The helmets are ugly, but they are there for protection. It should be your own choice weather or not to wear one, and I think they really need to come up with a better, more serious look to them. Motorcycle helmets don't look dorky to me, and I think they should build them a bit more like that. I've never worn a protective helmet, not only because they're dorky but because I just figure I don't need one. I've had bike accidents involving smashing my head into the pavement but it doesn't SEEM to have left any lasting damage. =P

No...one day when my son (about 12-13 y/o at the time) was just riding around the neighborhood....he looked down at his chain since it was making an odd noise...he looked up just in time to run into a tree. He was knocked off his bike. He had the wind knocked out of him and his helmet was cracked in half.
I had a time about 4 years ago that I hit a dog while out riding. I went down hard...I had road rash on my leg, my palms were fine since I always wear gloves...and the side of my helmet was flattened.
My first solo trip out of the yard on a 2 wheeler (30 some odd years ago) I was run off the road 100 yards from my house and ended up with a concussion. (And the old biddy who did it never even stopped)
Always buy, and wear, a good helmet when riding if your head is worth protecting.

I own a helmet I paid $53 for. I do not wear it because it's uncomfortable, stupid looking and I don't like carrying it when I go inside places. As far as helmets go, it's one of the least dorky looking ones. If I ever get in a crash and recieve a head wound, I'll probably say "Gee, I sure wish I had my helmet on." But until I get hurt, it will probably stay right where it is, in my kitchen.

are u insane
helmets are good
if it wasn't for a helmet i wouldn't be here today or atleast i wouldn't be in good condition
if i didn't have my helmet when i was in Canada i would have cracked my head open much too badly to be fixed
my and my brother-in-law were biking on vacation
someone was infront of my
i stopped
yet my brother-in-law didn't
i went flying into the street right on my head
i was lucky to have had my helmet on
i still broke my leg after my leg hit the ground but still my helmet saved me
so i would think twice next time you dont wear a helmet

I thought the same thing till I took a spill on my bike. Fortunately I had the helmet because it cracked the helmet in half. Also when you're a kid you don't weigh quite as much so it's a physics thing. Trust me, helmets are good.

Yep, they are indeed dorky ... unless you happen to fall on your head. The mayor of our town was hit by a car while he was riding his bike, fell on his head and suffered a severe brain injury that took him a couple of years to overcome. He's still in therapy. If he hadn't had a dorky helmet on, he would have been dead at the scene.
Adults are permitted to ride bikes without helmets here, but children must wear them by law. I wouldn't want my child to die just because he didn't want to wear a dorky helmet.

Days have changed from the days of streamers on your handle bar and clothepins to your spokes so you can sound so cool. I hate to tell you this, but I abolutely think they need to be worn. I am an ICU nurse and have seen some pretty nasty head injuries. Back in our day we did not ride on the high way either like so many of them do now without reflective tape of some kind.

Well, about 15 years ago I worked in a head injury association. Before that, I felt the same way you do. After seeing what head injury can do, and how even a mild head injury can cause SUCH personality changes and such, I am a little PARANOID about my family receiving head injuries.

i think helmets should be worn but not dumb lookin ones. they can protect your head from getting brain damage or a concussion. you don't want to have an iq of 20 just because you didnt feel lke wearing a f-ing helmet.
