I would definitely go to a college that does not have a football team. Look at Reed College in Portland, OR, and St. John's College in Annapolis, MD (also a branch in Santa Fe, NM).
Football programs are big money for universities. They cost a lot, but alums to whom sports are important are often big contributors when those donations translate to winning coaches and winning teams. Because sports can bring big money into a school, you could say that the funds can enhance education; however, you must accept that sports may then, also, have a lot of influence over other things.
Bottom line: unless you are an athlete or have a big interest in sports/physical education programs, select a school based on what YOU are looking for -- find a school that is the right fit for YOU (and you for it).

It isn't really that big of a deal to go to a university without a football team. I go to a university without a football team and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.

I graduated from a school without a football team and my daughter chose another University that also didn't have one.
Do you think a school overseas is less desirable if it doesn't have a soccer team?
As yourself, what is your reason to be there for 4 or more years? Hopefully, the quality of education should rate above any one extra-curricular activity.
At my daughter's school, University of California, San Diego, the students voted to divert the money that would have gone to a football program into more sports activities for the students themselves. Biking, surfing, and other clubs and classes make campus life richer for everyone.
And it wasn't for lack of facilites, as the RIMAC Center is the largest gym west of the Mississippi and served as the preseason training headquarters for the NFL San Diego Chargers for many years.
Life goes on, beyond the endzones.

I graduated from University of South Florida and it didn't have a football team. We supported the basketball program with the same enthusiasm as most schools support football.
USF does have a football team now.

Are you a football player? Why would it matter? There are a lot of really awesome schools out there that don't have sports teams at all. Look at New College in Florida.

I went to boston university. they don't have a football team. they had a football feild, but no team. i didn't care that much. our sport was hockey. unless you plan on playing football for your college, i wouldn't make that part of my decision making process. college is for your education, your future, not for watching the football team

It's not really a big deal...it's just that many colleges that have one (especially if they're good) will get higher admissions...and probably will be better known than those that don't.
