We just can't do anything right can we. If the US goes to help we have ulterior motives and it's all about us. If the US doesn't go to help we are all in-compassionate monsters and it's all about us. When we call genocide genocide because the UN must act in cases of Genocide, no one seems to hear us and the UN goes back to blowing smoke and doing nothing.
It would be nice if we could follow Washington's advice and isolate ourselves from the rest of the world save two basic things, The United States is a microcosm of the world, if they're out there they live here so we're connected. And the world is too small to ignore what is going on and sit self satisfied in our arrogant (because so many think the world can't touch us) abundance (because we generally work hard and produce much)
If we are the richest nation in the world as we are often accused of being, then we have an obligation to help out of that abundance. noblesse oblige!
Why we are hated? I don't believe we are, I think our enemies tell us that, and that is what sells media time so the media says that.
and BTW kadnil
We keep hearing that Canada is perfect, you have no crime and the perfect health system. Oh Canada If you need something let us know how we can help so you can "hate" us too.

There's no such thing as a country that helps everyone. Never has been, never will be, no exceptions. People in Rwanda and Darfur might find your theory interesting, to put it euphemistically. Please stop pandering and make an attempt to look at things objectively and dispassionately before asking questions. By the way- in response to the predictable "You must hate America" clichés that get thrown around here on a daily basis: Not in the least. What I hate is the Neocon vision of America. There's a difference.

Many individuals or organizations inside this country, use the government of United States to gain leverage against other countries. It may seems that you give them, and get nothing in returns, but those individual or organizations will get a way to get back what they expect, it can take months or years, but they will be definitly paid back. Of course, nobody will really know the things behind the deal!!

a combination of jealousy, fear, and resentment that we stick our big noses in things that do not concern us
Laissez-Faire Guy> very true (although the AIDS cash comes with strings that no condoms, etc has to be abstinence only or no $$ which has resulted in rising rate of AIDS..but money has been increased)
David> Well whatever Darfur thinks I don't care...I did not cause their problems, I have problems and they have never once even thought about helping me so I think I am guilt free as this goes...we give a lot to the world...we do not have to, and should not, worry about making sure we help every single person in world..we help as can reasonably do so but at some point people have to fix their own problems

To Delphi:
Love to. Remember the Tsunami? Who was there in force with the military providing aid and supplies? What country raise the most amount of private aid to help the victims? Yes, it was America.
Remember the Serbs ethnic cleansing of Muslims. Who was it that stopped them? America.
Who is it that is increasing efforts to fight AIDS in Africa? Bush!
I'm sure I could come up with lots of other examples.

Libs won't get this one at all.
If one goes and looks at how much in aid, materially and financially that we give around the globe, we are by far the most generous nation on the planet by way far.
Of course libs think it all comes with a price by us forcing our ways down others throats.

We give foreign aid all over the planet.

Like you're helping Sudan you mean? And Iraq? And Afghanistan? And Pakistan? And Palestine? Well are you really surprised that people aren't very fond of your "helpful" bombing, or "helpful" completely ignoring their desperate situation?
