I just replaced the piston rings and valve seals because smoke was coming out but still there is white/blue smoke! when i had the semi overhaul they also checked the turbo manifold for signs of an oil leak in case the turbo was damaged but there were no traces of oil and turbo is not noisy in anyway..the mechanic said he wanted to cut the pipe of my muffler because it seems like there is an obstruction because smoke comes out of the air filter if revved..but not sure if this could be causing the smoke..i have a toyota starlet gt turbo 1995 ep82

he could be right.. if you have a resonator or a muffler, the remainig oil could still be traped in there and it will take a while to burn out. Do this- take the spark plugs out, pour some gas into each of the cylinders, reinsert the spark plugs but leave the wires out. Turn the engine over a couple of times, so the gas cleans out the cylinder if it has oil in it. Plug the wire back up and test drive it. Then remove the plugs again and see if it has oil in the cylinder or the spark plug. If it dose, it may be that you inserted the valve seal or the o-ring for the pistion wrong. (I have a stong possibility that the piston rings are upside down) Also do a compression test. If all these are ok. have him chech the muffler. Also you might not see the oil but your turbo seals could be bad. (i got a 89 cressida with a 2j and it had that same problem with the muffler.) Good Luck

Bluish-white smoke definitely says "burning oil". A turbo that is leaking oil will not necessarily make a lot of noise. If your piston rings are not leaking, and the turbo isn't either, then oil must be getting into the exhaust at some other point.

You could still have a little oil in the cylinder and will take a while to clear out, Sounds like you have a blow back when smoke comes out the air filter something is not right , If you just half rebuilt the motor you can expect to do the rest later sorry, hope this helps.

Most of the time, the turbo is supposed to make sounds, i would go with an obstruction in the downpipe(s). Smoke comming back up could be because none of it revving up the turbo.

did you hone the block ? if you did check your head gasket . if it is new, the head might need to be resurfaced.
