You SHOULD have asked these questions BEFORE you bought your dachshund ... these cute little 'wiener dogs' are actually very sturdy, extremely loyal, and fairly easy to care for. The one thing you'll need to 'watch out for' is BACK INJURY ... buy some 'doggy stairs' so your dog can sit on the couch with you without 'straining' it's back jumping up. When you pick the dog up, be SURE that it's WHOLE BACK is 'straight' and that you have a hand under both the back feet and the front feet ( which takes two hands, since doxy's are so long). Make sure your dog gets plenty of GOOD FOOD (for 'small dogs' ONLY, and puppy food until it's a year old) and has a water bowl where it can reach it and drink, 24 hours of the day. NEVER 'hit' your doxy, because that can strain or even break their spine ... and be sure that you have good 'treats' when you are training him to 'sit,' 'stay,' and 'come.' You CAN teach your doxy to do 'tricks' ... but if you want it to 'sit up' with it's front paws in the air you must be VERY CAREFUL because that can be when you'll find out there is something 'wrong' with the back ... take your dog to the vet RIGHT AWAY for an exam and BE SURE that it gets it's shots if you weren't given a 'certified shot form' that tells you what shots it has, what it needs, and the DATES of those shots. Take your dog to the vet if you even THINK it is getting 'sick' ... doxy's are 'strong' but they are very small and can get 'deathly ill' faster because of their size. If you are 'good' to your doxy, it should be a happy, healthy, playful dog, and should live to be at least 12 years old ... and some can live well into their 20s.

I love my dachshund! He just turned 8 years old and has been with me since he was weaned. He is the best guard dog ever!! Big Bark with a bite to match if he is provoked. He's my shadow, anywhere I go in the house, he's behind me. He sleeps in the bed with me under the covers (he loves burrowing). We always tried to limit his jumping, but that has been a challenge. He does use doggie stairs most of the time.
He is having a slight problem with arthritis sporatically throughout the year, so he sometimes has to take reglan or metacam.

I have 2 Dachshunds and they are both wonderful! They were both a little hard headed with potty training, and the key is to be consistent. I took them out every hour as well as after eating, drinking or playtime. They are very stubborn when you want them to do something they don't want to. They LOVE to cuddle with you and be close to you. Keep a blankey nearby as the puppy will eventually like to burrow based on instinct. Contrary to popular belief, they are not horrible with children. They do get a little plump if you do not exercise them properly. They have back issues throughout their lives, so jumping on and off things should be kept to a minimum. They have short lil legs afterall. They also tend to need their ears cleaned out often, as they are floppy and collect all kinds of ickyness. Most of all though, they give a TONS of love to their people. Good Luck and have fun, I hope your puppy brings you years of happiness.

My mother had one, a little girl. She lived to be 17 years old, had cataracts, but was active up until she was struck by a car, and died.
She was very affectionate and tolerant, but wary of strangers. She was a good judge of character, and if she took a dislike to someone there was usually a good reason, but she wasn't aggressive.
The main thing is being a low and long dog, they can't tollerate a lot of stairs or jumping up and down off furniture, it can be bad for their backs, but Mum's dog never had any trouble there.
Good luck with your puppy.

The one thing I have heard about dachshunds are that in old age, they tend to get back issues. It's understandable if you look at the way their back is curved. I've also heard that their bark is very loud especially for their size

They are crazy. They bite and they run and they are just crazy.
Start from the beginning with saying no, in a harsh way to make them stop,

Make their crate a good place for them to go and sleep.
