I have 77 credits and my GPA is 2.8 If I retake the one class that I failed, how much would it go up?

It would make a huge difference. I failed intro Econ my freshman year in college. After retaking it, I got an A. The point is that after I retook it, the F was completely removed so it was like it never took place. I am reasonably sure that the F would be removed from your GPA by retaking the course. Yes, that would be a massive GPA point swing.

Take it! I have a 1.44 GPA because I've had 3 Ds. I am retaking one class in the summer and I'm in the way to get an A and if that happens my GPA will go to 2.0. If I retake another class and do well I can have my dreamed 3.0. I will retake the other classes in the Fall.

If the class is worth 3 credits, and you got a B the second time, your GPA would rise to 2.92. If it is worth 4 credits and you retake for a B, it would rise to 2.96. If it is 3 credits and you get a C, it would rise to 2.88. There are a lot of possibilities, based on what the new grade is. Basically, the only way you'll break 3.0 is if the course is worth 4 credits and you get an A.

That is only the case if your school completely erases the old grade and recalculates your GPA with the new grade. That is the case for a lot of schools, but not all.

77 x 2.8 = 215.6 credit points that you have so far
Let's say you get an A in the class at 3 credits
Now add 4.0 x 3 = 12 credit points for getting that A.
Your total is now 215.6 + 12 = 227.6
Your credit total is now 80
227.6 / 80 = 2.845

Your new GPA will be 2.845.

See Michael C's calculations below for another case where your first grade gets "erased" if you pass on the second try. His numbers are correct too, but as he indicated, the assumptions are different.

The biggest reason to re-take the class is so that nobody can scan your transcript for Fs and actually find one.

Yes, it would go up. D's, F's and even C's can kill your GPA, especially during the early stages, I highly recommend retaking the class. Once you retake it the F will be omitted and replaced with the new grade, as long as your grade is higher than an F your GPA will go up.
