I've wondered about this and I would like to know. Since they are both communist their government can't be the reason.

I've often felt this.

We have two communist countries. First we have relations with China, trade with them, etc. and they are slowly coming around to capitalism, human rights, prosperity and freedom.

On Cuba, we cut all relations with, actively prevent other countries from trading with them, etc. The result is a backwards poor country where the communists still retain absolute control and no progress is made.

I think it's because the anti-Castro cuban immigrants wield a fair amount of power down in Florida, a swing state.

Contrary to what others have written, the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 is not responsible for 45 years of bad foreign policy. There is no reason we could not have normalized relations with them starting in 1963 if that was the problem. Even if it was because they were allied with the Soviet Union, that ended in 1991.

The US began to embargo goods from Cuba in 1962 after the property of US Citizens was seized by the government in Cuba. This was during the Cold War when all things communist were terrible.

After the Soviet Union collapsed, the whole commie vs us thing calmed down. We began trading with China and other communist countries (Viet Nam, Russia, etc..) In 2000 the US signed a trade agreement that "permanently normalized trade with China".

I think it might go all the way back to the cold war, and the russian/cuban missile crisis in 1964, when Kennedy was President.

Emargoes are in place to this day with Cuba, barring the import of Cuban produced goods into the United States, as well as the travel of Americans to Cuba directly.

the reason for this, is because our government doesn't want Cuba to proft in anyway from Americans, or the American tourist industry.

As it stands right now, as an American, to travel to Cuba, u would have to fly into Mexico, or some other country first, and then fly to Cuba, requiring your passport to be stamped at each point along the way.

Because of the Cuban missile crisis. Cuba allowed nuclear weapons to be pointed at the U.S.

Because there are ridiculous restrictions in place regarding Cuba that should have been dismantled 20 years ago.

Once Fidel is dead the restrictions will drop and Cuba will be open for direct trade with America again.

Castro's still very anti-American. That's why the trade embargo still stands.
