Things will only change if we replace those representatives who have consistently voted for special interests vs the wishes of their own constituents, out of power.
Sadly, we have a corrupt crew in power right now and it's time to replace most of them and enact term limits.

After a recent trip to Australia, I was pretty humbled by how "functional" the country was, not every place was as nice as Melbourne or Sydney but there wasn't the heavy level of civil decay which is present in many parts of the US.
When I reflected on that, I realized it's not that Wisconsin or New Jersey or New York or Chicago are "SO" bad , it's just there's a lot more "room for improvement".
So it is with our politicians, I certainly would never challenge the situation to become WORSE - (President Cheney anyone?) , but I think there is a golden opportunity to have room for improvement.
Plainly speaking GW shouldn't be too hard an act to follow....
Unless it's like the old baseball saying , a famous coach personally replaced a VERY BAD player "X" playing in outfield , after performing badly himself, he commented that "X" screwed up so bad that nobody could play the position.

If it is Mitt Romney or Tim Pawlenty then I am sure Democrats will get a lot of reasons to bash on them. I do not believe that the Democrats will call those two presidents dumb or anything because those two candidates are bright but they will pick on their record like how Romney changed his stance. It is just a part of American politics, god can run for the Republicans and liberals will try to scrutinize him or make jokes about him, whats worse is that our heavily biased media gets involved in these atrocities.

You have a good point. Just like when people were throwing parties after the mid terms because Democrats took control. Everyone on the Left was acting like things were gonna change so dramatically and everyone was gonna get to live this fairy tale life. And it didn't happen. just like it's not gonna matter that much who our next president is. Policy will change, but reality is, we will still get up every day and go to school or work and continue doing whatever it is we do every day. I find it hilarious that people get so out of control over something so stupid.

I think that Americans need to play hard ball with our politicians. The thing is that the silent majority needs to stand up to be counted. I'm for poles as indicators on issues and if our Representatives don't go along then vote them out. The hell with this 20 year career in congress!

Have you ever read in history where a country has made moves toward communisn just all of a sudden relinquish their power??
The U.S. is soon to be full communist.
They are just doing it one step at a time.
Just like a frog in warm water, you can continue to heat it and the frog will stay in it until it dies because the changes are suttle!
This gets you used to restrictions a little at a time.

I don't know about YOU, but didn't people seem to be "happier" -when Clinton was President? I mean- back THEN, everyone WAS shaking their heads at Bill's "stupidity"... -But times were good, & HE was the only one having problems (& we could forgive HIM- because it wasn't hurting US). NOW- EVERYONE's complaining about SOMETHING; -The War, Bush, High Gas Prices, Immigration, -you name it. ... -So maybe you're right about the President NOT being able to DO much...-But having a man in the Whitehouse that you can relate to & LIKE- sure HELPS the National "mood..." And maybe THAT'S why we're already looking forward to the NEXT Election- because our current one is just NOT "cutting it" with the People.

Presidents don't have a lot of independent power to make change
They do have a lot of independent power to cause damage when they ignore the law and disrupt political processes.
Yes, things will very likely improve if the next administration is one that actually chooses to follow the law rather than ignoring it or breaking it at whim.

You sound like a wise person. Change is difficult in this country. But yes, I think things will change. I think we'll get out of Iraq. I think we'll see serious attention paid to environmental issues, support for alternative energy, and pressure on American automakers to make more efficient vehicles. The government will pay more attention to the scientists who work for it. We'll show more respect for other nations and receive more respect in turn. Changes will be made to our health care system. And, strangely enough, we'll see soem fiscal discipline. It's amazing to me that people still think Republicans are the party of fiscal restraint.

As long as we allow the politicians to pile unrelated items into the same law it is unlikely it will ever improve. Our politicians are totally unaccountable.
Today with the amount of money available to corrupt the politician & the beurocrat, the people needs to know who's pocket they are in. By each item having to stand on it's own merrit it will be clear who own's whom.
