No - the GPS network is provided by the US Air Force; if you're in the US you're already paying for it with your taxes.

In addition to the receiver, you can pay extra for a mounting kit, batteries, power adapter or hardwire power supply. Also if you want to buy a new map set that will cost extra.

As far as I know, all GPS units will pick up the satellite signal without monthly costs, or activation fees. Turn it on, and you have a signal for free!

The XM Radio and OnStar services are beyond that, and do have fees.

No they do not charge a fee. However, you have to buy a new DVD if you want to update your maps every other year or so. Some companies have it where you can pay a fee and the nav system will even tell you how crowded the streets are and if roads are blocked. This will apply only to large metropolitan areas. good luck.

Things like TomTom don't, you buy the unit and the maps for where you want, that's it.

Other things like Wayfinder on Orange (http://www.wayfinder.com) charge UK£2 every two weeks.
