yea not only does the crap on the bottom of the tank get sucked up, but the fuel pump on newer cars in inside the tank and actually uses the fuel as a coolant/lube. so when you are "runnig on fumes" the sending unit is running hot (not hot enough to be dangerous to you) and will wear out sooner, AND any sputters of air that get to the fuel injectors "jars" them which is not good either.

How much money ya got?

Seriously, unless you have to make a long drive and are afraid of running dry, why not keep your tank on the low side and just add a reasonable amount? Remember, gasoline is dead weight in the tank and unnecessary gallons will cut your mileage. Same thing is true for a lot of heavy stuff in the car trunk or truck bed.

For some stupid reason, I always wait until the tank is almost empty. I think I should stop doing this, before I run out of gas one day.

I fill the oil twice a week (2-3 quarts each time). If I am at or near 1/2 gas tank when I fill the oil, I top off the gas too.

I wait until my tank is nearly empty. I get SO angry at the cost of gas these days. It's $3.36 a gallon today where I live! There's a HUGE conspiracy out there-- probably Bush and the Chevron/Exxon/Mobil people. The *******.

You shouldn't wait until an empty tank because the crap floating in the tank gets sucked in and clogs the filter.

I usually wait until its 3 quarters and then add some. I actually never fill it up because I can't afford it, and my car is so good on gas anyways. It gets 41 miles to the gallon.

Since I drive 44 miles one way to work, and there's only one gas station along the way, I like to always keep at least a half a tank.
