An intense purple and crimson colored diamond, the only known diamond of that color, has come into the limelight as its anonymous owner has decided to get the stone appraised, apparently not realizing the rarity of the stone. The diamond, weighing between two and five carats, is priceless according to experts who have been assessing it at London's British Gemmological Institute. The Institute refuses to say whether the diamond is present in the UK, citing security concerns. According to JD Boles, Director General of the British Gemmological Institute, the diamond was cut within the past 25 years, though when it was discovered is unclear. "Weight for weight, this is the most valuable natural object on earth. It is an amazing and exciting thing to see. I have spent days looking at the stone, it has such depth to the color. After 30 years of studying diamonds this is simply spectacular. It's the rarest object in the world," enthuses Boles, who says that the diamond may have come from the Amazon Basin. Boles cannot price the gem, but reckons it to be worth considerably more than a red diamond of which there are an estimated ten worldwide, and they cost up to US$4 million per carat. There are only 10 red diamonds in the world.

Red diamond is the rarest and most valuable.

Fancy Red Colored Diamonds
Red is by far the rarest of all colored diamonds. Less than 20 stones have so far been certified as red diamond. Some of the red diamonds have fetched more than million dollars per carat. Most of the other colored diamonds fetch between five to six figures per carat.
Red Moussaieff Diamond
Red is undoubtedly the rarest colored diamond. Besides a 0.95 carat red diamond sold at auction in 1987 for over a million dollars, only a few others are known to exist. A 0.25 carat red oval sold a few years ago at Christie's for $326,800 per carat. Red diamonds are almost priceless.
