The way to get the best start off the line in a stick shift is to bring the engine just past its RPM for torque so when you pop the clutch, the engine drops right down to the peak torque. You want to heat up the rear tires for better grab by doing this for one second before letting off the front brake. If your RPM is at peak torque when you launch, this will enable you to keep it between peak torque and peak horsepower through next 1/4 mile.
If you're driving a slip'n-slide, you still need the one second of tire warm up, and when you launch, slam it to keep it between peak torque and peak horsepower for 1/4 mile.
If you do this you'll be competitive. To be great, you shouldn't have had to ask because your butt already told you what to do.

It depends on the intellectual capacity and maturity of the responder...
As for the drag start I used to leave the line as soon as the last yellow light began to fade... which meant the tree had switched to green, you just couldn't see it the incandescent bulb light up yet.
Because every car winds up it's suspension a little different before it moves out, try it staging shallow then try it staging deep, see what works best. If your car is slow to wind up the suspension and get off the line you might try leaving then the last yellow light comes on rather than wait for it to dim.

It depends on the tree. Some trees have a half second before it goes green, and the pro tree has only .4 sec before it goes green. I like to just barely break the stage light and as soon as I see the yellow lights, then turn it loose and go.
The old trees had a .5 between yellow lights, I always watched the last yellow light and when it came on, I took off.
Good luck.

I cant answer the question about the lights and the car but I can answer why you get stupid answers, and that is because Yahoo answers are not moderated and it seems that this is one of the last refuges of the intellectually challenged and the social inept who feel that there own ego's need massaging rather than answering a question and helping out.

I think sometimes after answering a number of questions properly, an urge for some levity takes over. I sometimes make more of a comment than answer just to give the seriousness a break. Get your info from the serious, and maybe a chuckle from the not so serious.

The best start at a drag strip is not an intellectual question. Sorry.

It's because most people don't use the internet to persue an intellectual interest, just to do uninteresting things and let their brains rest. I find the same on my university's forums on Myspace. If I write about anything important or anything that requires thought and discussion, they hate me.

If they don't know the answer then they think you shouldn't either. Or they just feel like talking (typing) and it doesn't matter what about. I asked a question about an engine swap. In my question I said "I don't care if it will work or not...I just want to know if it will fit" One answer was "Let's just say I wouldn't do it" I didn't ask if he would do it. My .02
