couple months ago i was wondering the same .
i own a 5 speed maxima and when i drive in the city i usually shift at 2500 rpm. my brother shifts at the same range on his mustang cobra. I researched a bit and found out that it is the best time to shift under normal driving conditions. good luck with getting a good car.

The engine speed to upshift will depend on how fast you are trying to accelerate. The faster you accelerate, then the higher the rpm for the shift.
For normal acceleration on a city street, I would think somewhere between 2000-3000 rpm.
I am not familiar with the paddle shifters, so I can't say if you have to downshift or not. You can check what the owner manual says about speed range in each gear. So I would want to be in the middle of the range for the lower gear when I downshifted. Good luck.

Go with about 3000 rpms. The engine gets loud at 2500 but if shifting to 5th gear it won't shift and you will be stuck in 4th. This won't happen at 3000 rpms. Its a stick so your gonna save on gas regardless. You have to really feel out your car to see what rpm it will let you upshift in because some cars will let you speed shift and you aint ready to learn about that.

Well I personally shift at 3000rpm. This is generally a nice time to shift with my car because the engine isn't loud, nor is the engine shaking. When my RPM's drop below 3 I usually downshift. I really save gas this way but it's hard to drive like that when you just wanna speed!

The lower the better. RPM's that is, not so low where it stalls the engine, or makes it rough to drive. Some cars have the shift up light which is pretty good at getting fuel economy decent. Hope this helps, good luck.

find the specifications. for your car online & learn at what rpm the torque peak is rated (not the horse power) shift at or just above that rpm for maximum fuel efficiency, I'm assuming if you have a paddle shift that you will also have a tachometer. the torque will peak at a much lower rpm than the hp. some cars have the most efficient shift points marked on the speedometer look for one of those if you dont see a tachometer (engine speed indicator)

I think you have it correct, shift up when the engine gets to a certain pitch (you have to have a feel for it). Shift down the at about the same rpms.

Basic Rule - Higher gear at lower speed always save gas, but not to the point that your engine stall.
