you are correct. . . the air filter does allow air in (or sometimes won't) but look at it this way... what goes in must come out. . . in fact the whole process of internal combustion ensures that the volume of air coming out is several times more than what comes in. that's what makes power possible, the explosion inside the cylinder pushes the piston down which turns the crankshaft etc...etc... as far as the cost. . . the alloy used inside the converter is called platium (not sure about spelling there)( a mixture of platinum and other metals). have you purchased any platinum jewelry lately? not cheap! anyway as the internal temperature of the converter during normal operation can reach 1500 degrees f. and beyond, every particle of metal that passes through the converter bonds to its internals thus over time clogging it up. look at it this way. . . you (or your mate) should never have to buy another converter for that vehicle! oh and by the way. . . keeping the air filter serviced will help the converter do its job and last longer.

The matrix inside the converter can break up and pass into the exhaust pipe, blocking it. This prevents the exhaust gases from flowing, which slows the airflow through the engine in a similar way to blocking the intake air (e.g. blocked filter).
If this happens, you need to replace the converter, plus the exhaust system after the converter (to remove the broken-up matrix).

Your right, air in and air out and if the catalyic converter is plugged there is no way to let the exhaust out of the engine and the exhaust backs up causing runability problems.

Just like the air filter, the catalytic can get plugged too.

When a mechanic tells you the catalyst needs replacing, it means he doesn't know what the hell's wrong, but 325 lb is enough to figure it out and fix it when you drop it off.

Go out and check your catalyst. It hasn't been changed, has it?

The converter can get clogged, and such, causing similar symptoms. Is a legit problem.
