No one is ever conditioned to feel old and useless. These are conditions, separate though sometimes together, that are placed on seniors by a younger society that has little understanding of the problems, age wise, emotionally, mentally, physically or any other way. They do this because they may see someone older who has not had the benefits of good medical care and support in other ways. These are labels that are placed on older persons by a society that has not walked in their shoes and really doesn't think that they ever will.
For the majority of seniors, the terms "Old" and "Useless" are in the state of mind of the person. Many retirees feel this way while they are making life adjustments after retirement. They find that there are many ways that they can still contribute to society and do it on a daily basis. Those words become obsolete quickly to them. And, many of them return to the workforce just as quickly as they retired and usually in a new career.
Old age is looked upon by this generation as a time when you age, lose your mind, lose your senses and then die. This is not what it's all about at all.
We're living longer, healthier, wealthier and richer lives these days. And, it will continue.
To answer your question, yes, it is a GROSS misconception.

Only people who really are old and useless feel that way. The rest of us expect to be going strong well into our 90's and beyond.
My fraternal grandparents lived (healthily) into their late 80's, and maternal grandparents in their late 90's. Most of my Aunts and Uncles are still going strong in their late 80's.
I fully expect to see my 100th birthday,(2043) and then some.

First you must define Old, you are as old as you feel and act.
Some are old at 50 some at 80 some even at 90. When I reach 95 I will answer your question

no in the past old age was really that. now, old age will not look as it did twenty or even ten years ago....
the twenty-year olds of today will still be active and vigorous even at 80 and into their 90's. medicine is that good, and will continue to get better.

Age is a number. Old is a state of mind. I would say it's all relative.
