I have a 1987 honda accord and it cranks up but won't stay?
running unless your foot stays on the gas. What could be wrong with it.

it has a brand new carborator (sp) and it did stay running for a bit when I adjusted the idle but it didn't sound right. It was idling up and then down. Died out when I put breather and stuff back on.

If the stalling problem started after you put the carb on, check for vacuum leaks at the carburetor base gasket or to see if the carb is loose allowing air to come in under the carb.

you also need to check all of the vacuum lines to the carb to make sure they are tight and not cracked or leaking. The lines at the base of the carb (below the throttle plates) are the first to check because that's where they leak would cause the car to stall.

if the carb is tight and there are no vacuum leaks, chances are you have a hung open EGR valve. That is the only thing other than a carb that is flooding out or a bad base gasket that would cause the problems you mention. I would suspect the EGR valve if the problem occured before you replaced the carb.

hope that helps

also check your fuel filter, even if you just repaled it,you could have rust in your gas tank .this would give you burst of fuel for idle but will run out eventually, also fuel line collapsing?water in fuel?,craked vacuum lines, egr system, carb gasket or many things, plugged PVC?,wow, this brings back many bad memories diagnosing cars LOL,any way ,oh,plugged exhaust?,anyway, just keep plugging away, you'll find it.
