R 'n' B still is rhythm and blues!
The real R 'n' B is still Dr. Feelgood, the Blues Brothers, Automatic Slim, the Brothers Grimm, Nine Below Zero, Lew Lewis, etc, etc. and always will be.
Modern R 'n B (or 'Rubbish and B*ll*cks', to give it the correct title) is a classic case of "Derr, we can't fink of a new name for dis music, derr, so we'll hijack an old name. Derr"
Shame, really..

Hey I feel you. I'm only 19 but hate to listen to the stuff they call R&B today. People say they listen to Beyonce, Akon, T-Pain and Ciara and wanna say that it's R&B, that's not even true.
R&B really died when the 2000s hit. When people like Boyz II Men, Lauryn Hill, Babyface, Toni Braxton, Silk, AZ Yet, Blackstreet, All-4-One, Zhane, SWV, Changing Faces, Guy, New Edition, ect fell off the face of the earth.
Now don't get me wrong, there are still some stellar R&B vocalist that are out there representing for the real thing. People like Musiq Soulchild, India Arie, Ne-Yo, Robin Thicke, Ruff Endz, Fantasia, Jaheim, Joe, Tank, D'Angelo, and even the Isley Brothers are still making hits, these are mostly the people still throwin it down for what R&B should be, makin' you move and sway, lettin' you know that it's gonna be okay because yo baby, is on the way, ya feel me?
Now don't confuse it, there'll be nothin like ol school Isley Brothers, The Gap Band, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Earth Wind and Fire, or even Smokey Robinson and the Miracles (my personal favorite) but music has got to evolve with the times, so I'm pretty content with the REAL R&B out there today. Don't try and tell me Rhianna, Beyonce and Chris Brown is R&B, it's not even the same.

First --Kudos to the young people that responded who even recognized the validity of the question.
I think that there are a few key issues that are contributing factors of how you define R&B. One is your age factor and how much exposure to music you have had either from parents or older siblings. Next is geographics. Not as much today with all the technology, but before you were limited to what music was being played depending on if you were living in an urban or rural area. Last, it comes down to what YOU are expecting to hear when you turn on an "R&B" station. Are you expecting to hear the 50's vocal harmony groups, the 60's and 70's soul artists, or the current commercial music they label as R&B ?

I don't think it stopped but it isn't really mainstreamed anymore. There are still some true R&B artists out there but not on you local stations. I'm only 19 so I grew up with the 90s R&B so I love that but I also love earlier 90s.
