I have an older house with a dirt basement floor and I'm worried they will try to take up residence inside. How can I either kill them or discourage them from coming near the house. I already keep the grass cut short and don't have much lying around that they would want to hide under. The one I think is a milk snake is kind of grey body with tan around black bloches. I live north of Kingston ON.

Please don't kill them. They are beneficial and quite harmless. Find someone who is not phobic to find them, crate them, and then relocate them if their presence is bothering you that much. They can't hurt you or pets or your children. Besides, they probably won't stick around forever.

I understand you not wanting the snakes around. I heard putting moth balls around will help keep them away. Also, consider finishing your basement floor and patching any holes in baseboards.

I accidentally ran one over with a lawn mower once. I didn't see it until it was too late. I don't recommend this though because my mulching mower made it totally vanish but you could smell the death for weeks after.

Go to a garden store near you and ask for some sulfur to put around your house...That should do the trick..

Why would you want to kill such beneficial animals. They eat vectors that are a hazard to you but they are not.

Please don't kill snakes! They're doing you a favor and eating your vermin around the house. Obviously, they're feeding because they find rats, moles, and others to eat...
