Lord Horatio Nelson was killed at the Battle of Trafalgar. This was a great naval victory for the English against the French. It was obviously Nelson's last battle. "Last stand" usually implies a defeat. I am not sure that Nelson was ever defeated in a battle.

Nelson died at the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805. He body was not unceremoniously deposited in a brandy barrel, as has been suggested, but properly brought back for burial, preserved in spirit. The full details can be found at this site:

nelson did not make it out alive, his body was put into a cask of brandy for preservation until his flagship made it back to england!
