There is a story that I heard once. It suggested that for a time the weightlifting record was thought to be unbreakable. "There's only so much a human body can lift," people said, "and we've reached that point." And no matter how much anyone tried they never seemed to get past that point. Not by as much as an ounce.

Until one day a coach decided to lie. What he described to his athelete as a 'warm up' was actually measurably over the record. And the lifter did it easily. Must to the lifter's amazement when they both re-counted the weight and demonstrated that it was so. After that, not only that lifter but many others were able to get higher and higher records for years. The barrier wasn't a physical one after all, but a psychological one.

That may not be a true story.... but if it's not, it should be. Many people have experienced something just like it at some point in their lives - an instance of being able to do something they would have thought comletely impossible except for the fact that it just happened.

And this may be what some coaches are referring to when they say to give 110%. Don't just do what you THINK you can... do MORE.

Have someone run their absolute fastest for 100 yards. Time them and look at the results. Then tell them that if they do not beat that time by 3 seconds, they can never see their family again. I garuntee they run faster.

People do not realize what the human body is capable of. Though you may give it your best every singles game in the regular football season. I bet you try even harder in the superbowl. No matter how hard you've worked in your life, there is always something more inside of you.

We mask our normal best as 100% percent when in reality under certain conditions we can exceed that "limit" and reach "110%"

yes, because what I have to offer today might be 100%, but from that I will have learned something new, so now there is more to offer. It also is common for us to only focus on something to just barely accomplish it, while our mind is elsewhere. Focusing 100% or 110% opens new channels of discovery.

Well for ages it has been believed that humans can sometimes tap into certain strenghths they thought they never had because they never force them selves.

So when a coach says " give me 110% out there" hes just say give it your all.

No, but this rings true:
Looking at life in this manner is a prescription for disappointment. When you look at your life--all things considered, in a light that holds your self up to unrealistic expectation, then there is bound to be problems. "Luck" is something, which neither has meaning nor scientific substance. "Coincidence", the paranormal and the spiritual world hold more interest in observation and interpretation of tenable thought. What purpose does it serve is an even more fascinating proposition than the question of faith. This attitude toward the inevitability of problems in life is a sure way to open the door to depression or to the precipice of the event horizon of it. There is, and I say this as somebody who is probably older than you and has seen a few things, the distinct possibility that things, people, feelings, etc., that we wish to get in return for our efforts--regardless of what they are, the dimensions, parameters of which can be as closed as the corner of a dark room or as open as the sky; there is in our hearts, dreams, aspirations and the fact that we are able to express our needs, concerns, and desires in the hope of a free society, quite enough--no, very more than I am able to handle at any particular time or endeavor, pursuit--whatever. THAT is in and of itself truly awesome! Think about it with your heart--not your head for just a moment. And there is a sweet redemption in even the mere thought--a breath of air, which holds so much bliss and promise that it is beyond description in words. "Listen more to things than to things that are said. "And ride on into the sunset with the secret of it's charity in your heart. Hold it there like the treasure of a great story--the stuff that dreams are made of. What's it worth? Priceless!"
