I assume that when you use the phrase "fighting in public" that it is because that is what the charge is. That comes from Penal Code section 415, disturbing the peace. That can be charged as an infraction, with a maximum fine of around $600; or as a misdemeanor, with a maximum jail time of 90 days and a fine of acround $1,000. Even if it is filed as a misdemeanor, this does not sound like anything where a prosecutor would be pushing for jail time.

BTW, a riot is when two or more people are using force against others, not when people are fighting together.

From the California Penal Code:

404. (a) Any use of force or violence, disturbing the public peace, ... by two or more persons acting together, and without authority of law, is a riot.

405. Every person who participates in any riot is punishable by a fine not exceeding one thousand dollars, or by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year, or by both such fine and imprisonment.

Of course, there's also potential charges for assault.

240. An assault is an unlawful attempt, coupled with a present ability, to commit a violent injury on the person of another.

241. (a) An assault is punishable by a fine not exceeding one
thousand dollars ($1,000), or by imprisonment in the county jail not exceeding six months, or by both the fine and imprisonment.

Those are some of the possible charges.
