I know that a government is supposed to be governed by the will of the people, I also know that a government also has the responsibility to protect its people, even from themselves. In modern day society we can clearly see a lot of governments struggle with this concept, including the United States. What is more important, the will of the people or "protection" of the people? and why?

Greetings Friend,

Are the people ignorant? Do we know so little that we need the government to protect us from ourselves? Do we need "Big Brother" watching out for us?

The people have become afraid of the government and that is not 'right'. I like Jesse Ventura's philosophy. It is not about what he wants. It's about what his constituents want.

The government is to serve the people, not the other way around. Maybe the government should be more honest with the people and we would let them 'protect' us more.

When someone uses the argument, that they are protecting me from myself, they are acting like I am not capable of making my own decisions. I do NOT give them this power. I can make my own decisions.

sending love,

The will of the people.

In providing for the protection of the people, it gets a little out of hand. Government steps in where they do not belong. Don't fall into the socialist idea of governments job is to protect the people from themselves. The government is made up of the people. And you do not want those to think too highly of themselves, or this will lead to other problems.

After all, in the long run, if there is a problem, it will be answered by the will of the people.

Having read the US constitution several times and referring to it countless times, I have never seen that the government is supposed to be governed "by the will of the people." It's true that "We the people of the United States of America" laid down, through our representatives in the constitutional congress, the constitution but in doing that, we established a republic. Which means we elect representatives to govern for us. The only real power that the "will of the people" have in that process is who we elect to office.

The protection of the people, the nation, is laid down in the constitution. Protection not only from enemies foreign and domestic, but from our own government. Many here will think I'm full of crap about this but I'll be happy to discuss the constitution with anybody that wishes. It's my hobby.

Right now I say the protection of the people. It happened a few other times when public will was another way the Revolution and the Civil War to name two.

now this really depends in the certain situation.

you have to ask yourself weather or not what we, as a nation are doing to protect our citizens is the right thing. is it etical and moral??

protection is obviously a very big thing and usually they go hand in hand. i mean when you look at it, most of the people of the nation want or have a will to be protected. it is also the governments duty to protect them.

i would need a specific situation to determine weather the will of the people or the protection is better.

There's a fine line between "the will of the people" and "mob rule." That's no excuse, though, for some of the things governments do...

Yes, Good Point.

Civil Liberties don't mean much to people whose families have been killed by Terrorists.
The Patriot Act has already saved thousands of American lives. The Terrorists & the Democrats hate it.

I don't thinkt he government should be protecting people from themselves. Someone once said "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance", and so it is. We should be protecting ourselves from ourselves and let the govornment worry about external threats.

My will is to be protected, so I guess the will of SOME people is being taken care of. You can't please all of the people all of the time.
