My pick goes to the West. Young QB's and wicked running games. Not to mention Denver and San Diego's defenses. No question in my mind. Denver (go Broncos), San Diego, Kansas City, and Oakland (who will probably suck this year and not even win a game in the division). How can anyone argue that?

The AFC west, but the AFC north is a very close second. The West is a powerhouse, with good teams such as: sandiego, denver, and kansas city who are in contention for the playoffs consistently. Oakland is crappy, but they had a decent draft and russell fits their offensive plans, with his deep ball throwing capability. the other three teams I mentioned all have good offenses, and good defenses (oakland too.. but their offense is dreadful), but my fav team KC needs some work on defense. The matchups within the division are always fun to watch, b/c the teams are so good. Denver could be scary in the future, with cutler quarterbacking and throwing to walker, henry running the ball, and the defense is good. (yeah I hate admitting that as a chiefs fan.. oh well) san diego has the best runningback in the league (the afc west has a good group of runningbacks), KC has a good offense, and oakland might be a surprise.

Well this is a good question. Lets start out with this decade and so far the NFC north has two superbowl rings in it. while the AFC west has a loss and not even a close loss at that.
Next you have three probowl QBs in the North. With Carson being in the top three. There are good running games in the North with exception of Cleveland. Wich West shares that bad team in Oakland.
Talk about defenses and you may have heard about Baltimore or Pittsburgh's defense. Lets talk about Coaching in the North where Marvin,Billick are good coaches. Yes Pittsburgh has a rookie coach but so does San Diego and Oakland.
WRs arent even close with Cincy entire core and Hines Ward and Derrick Mason easlily better than the West.
Anyways there are numerous similiarities but in the end count the rings and the proof is in the history of the Super Bowls in this decade.

As a Broncos fan, i'm biased. The West has playoff contenders in the Chargers, Broncs and maybe maybe the Chefs. The Raiders will be lucky to reach 6-10.

The North has playoff contenders in the Ravens, Bengals and Steelers. The Browns will be much like the Raiders.

If I had to rank the teams from both Divisions, it would go like this:

1. San Diego
2. Baltimore
3. Denver
4. Cincy
5. Pittsburgh
6. K.C.
7. Raiders
8. Browns

Using those rankings, it appears that the AFC West is better top to bottom.

I'm a Chargers fan, so I'm biased towards the West, but I have to say that I think that the North is slightly tougher because KC has really been slipping in terms of talent as their stars age. If you asked this question a year ago, I'd definitely say West by far, but now I honestly gotta say the North is the tiniest bit tougher.

Both conferences have two good teams each (Bengals, Broncos, Chargers, Ravens), one mediocre team each (Chiefs, Steelers), and one bad team each (Browns, Raiders), so the two divisions are really really close in terms of toughness.

I think you're underrating the Raiders a little bit. Sure, their offense is probably one of the worst in NFL history, but their defense has quietly become very good. Their very young secondary is incredibly talented. If the Chiefs lose LJ (which is definitely a possibility), I think the Raiders will finish 3rd in the division.

It may still be the west, but for how long.... and seriously....are there that many broncos fans on here?? REALLY!!!! I mean, did you watch the end of the season last year.... You aren't that good, your running game isn't that good, your recieving corps aren't that good, oh and now you have a great Defense all of a sudden??? Oh and Cutler is the answer, I almost forgot. It sucks that I have to root for San Diego just because I can't stand Denver.... Wait, the CHIEFS D will be great this year, and now we have a reciever, oh and a young QB oh and all this cap room......watch out!!! Nevertheless, great question and these teams are close as a group....the browns seem to be making good moves for the future though.

OH Young QBs, well let's see who is OLD in the AFC North other then McNair? The AFC North is a PHYSICAL division. They don't play to win, they play to beat up their opponent and wear them out. Do you really think the Defense of Denver and San Diego compare to the Defense of Pittsburgh and Baltimore? Clearly you are only picking the west because you are biased.

The North. They have gotten 3 teams that will be over .500. The Ravens will have a repeat year and win the division, the Bengals will go 11-5 and get a wild card, and the steelers will make the wild card at 9-7. The ravens will go 13-3 (again) and make the AFC championship but lose to the Pats

AFC North by far. Steelers will take it all! Funny how you mention San Diego's defense as their strong point, what happened to LT? Not to mention if Schottenheimer (even though he's cursed) couldn't take them to a second round in the playoffs, the new guy won't be able to. And Denver hasn't done a damn thing since John Elway left. I can't wait for this September when I can watch Polamalu stomp all over Cutler.

The AFC West must be the weaker of the two.The Chargers certainly are the group to conquer interior the AFC West. i think of the NFC North would be particularly aggressive. The Vikings are probably the preseason favorites, however the Bears and Packers the two have a valid shot at triumphing the branch besides.
