Just google "refurbished labtops." Those should be okay. At least your not really buying off of a stranger.

You could buy a copy of Micro Mart computer magazine, it's only £1.99 and you will find numerous adverts. There are some excellent bargains in reconditioned as new laptops with a full warranty. Also a lot of brand new at discount prices. It's also a good magazine if you want to know a little more about how things work. Hope this helps

For the love of God, do NOT buy an Acer.
I have an Acer, and it decided to break when I was in the middle of my A level coursework, and again on college open evening, when I really needed it to work.
It works fine now, but that's just because the college technician gave it an icy glare, or might be because I decided to take Vista off and reinstall Windows XP.

you can get one at walmart they have some pretty cheap ones that are also name brand. Also some that are even cheaper like Acer for less then 500. Check them online at
http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_query=laptop&search_constraint=0&ic=24_0&ref=&search_sort=4&selected_items=
Also I wouldnt try ebay because sometimes they look like they are in good condition and yet they have no memory or there is a virus or something. To be safe go with a company that you can get a refund if it fails before the warrenty

I would look for a used one thats not too old(1 or 2 years old)and do some research so you will know about what its worth. Look in your local newspaper classified ads for a week or two to see what they are going for. You should be able to get a decent one for about 250 dollars or so. You dont need a high speed or fancy one for college work. Try to get one with 512MB of system ram or more, if you can.

once you're prepared to settle for easy applications purely, then particular, you will discover one for $900. attempt Dell or HP, fairly a refurbished or clearance sale. Forgo the hot sexy abode windows Vista or middle Duo 2, and decide for an Athalon twin middle processor working XP SP2 which has purely approximately the comparable overall performance for much less value... i does not settle for something under 512 MB to 1Gig RAM, and a CPU of a minimum of a million.80 3 Ghz, and a tough stress no smaller than 80 Gigs....

Keep tyring e-bay, just because there is not 1 there 1 day some-one could put a laptop on e-bay at any time. Check every day. You will pay far more from a shop for a second hand laptop.

You can pick up a new advent from about £300, or a reconditioned second-hand one for about £80.

1. does your school has computer campus store? If it does, there's chance they sell computers (new) in discounted price available exclusively for students/faculties. Check that one out!
2. student mailing list in your campus. There are many mailing lists for students offering or seeking things. You might find one.
