If a male Betta or any male Labyrinth fish thinks it is breeding season they will start by preparing a bubble nest to hold the eggs till the eggs have hatched. If the water surface is still and the temperature of the water is warm then a healthy male Betta is going to build a nest. It is basically a sign that he thinks it is time to breed and it is a good indication that he is healthy.

When there is not a mate present, the male will make a bubble nest to impress a female. When there is a female present, the bubble nest will protect the eggs.

Not really, a bubble net marks the males territory to some extent, but even that is related to breeding. The only real purpose is for breeding. If you have a male making a nest, he's looking to attract a girl.

bettas make bubble nests for attracting a female and for protecting the eggs if he already has a mate. the way to tell if a betta is happy is if he is active, swimming around blowing bubbles, and also if he is eating all his food.
