What does it mean when a contact is not signed in on their messenger but they are shown to be online on their profile?

I am not talking about someone who's on messenger, but someone's who's not signed into messenger, but is showing online. I'm having this problem with my account that's why i'm asking. I'm not stalking anyone...LOL

That they are logged into Yahoo!, but haven't opened or logged into the messenger service.
For example, I don't have Yahoo! Messenger, but I use the email, answers, and other programs, so I'm online but no one can msg me on Messenger.

Perhaps they are signed in to yahoo, like checking their Fantasy Football team or something, but they don't have IM running. I'm just taking a guess.

They are using invisiable mode for their messenger.They are there, but they really don't want to be bothered. If you IM them and they do not answer even though you know they show online. You're pretty much at their mercy if they wish to answer you back or not. Sometimes giving someone their space is worth the wait....

they are signed on using their phone...
because most phones now carry a form of instant messenger

That their account is recognized by the computer (they log in often with that account in that computer or they have the 'Remember Me' box checked) and their Internet connection is active.

it means that theyre online as on the internet.if its offline it means that theyre not online but they might be still on line
