They all work in different fields. The topics they choose to work on is astounding. Seriously, are these topics taught in high school? Where do these projects/ knowlege come from? HOW DO THESE HIGH SCHOOLERS THINK ABOUT THESE PROJECTS???
Here, you might want to check out the stuff they did in the Siemens Competitions: http://www.siemens-foundation.org/compet...

If a high school student has had a decent education so far, they already know generally what science is about and how it is done. If they have any interest at all in science, they are reading on their own, not just school homework. As they read, they come across some subjects that interest them more than others. At the same time, they know they want to do a science project, so they are always on the lookout for some small thing they could investigate as a project.

Once they get an idea they are satisfied with, they start learning about the subject. MIT Open Courseware is an excellent project, but it's not at high school level. It generally requires much more than high school math. You can start on the web at Wikipedia etc. and move on to libraries. Even university libraries are usually willing to help out a student serious about science.

If you are serious about science, putting significant effort into doing a good science project has a high payoff. It's an excellent experience, lots of people are willing to help you, your work is evaluated and rewarded, and you have something of great value to show along with a college application. That carries a lot of weight.

No volcanoes! I'm no longer certain if that is very clinical, however perhaps you might do a assignment on how tune impacts habits/temper. If no longer, experiment 2 special cups of water, one protected and one exposed and notice if there used to be a difference (comparable to new organisms establishing)
