They learn that reaction from reactionary parents. If our parents are optimistic, adventurous, curious, and open to new experiences, we grow up braver, saner, and happier.

By the way, it just occurred to me that "optimistic, adventurous, curious, and open to new experiences" is a pretty good description of most immigrants. So the future of nations that welcome them looks bright.

Fear of the unknown. Have you ever checked out Hare Krishna. Everyone thinks they are just strange people or a cult that shave their head and dance on the street. But it is actually the most ancient way to self realization and how to love God. What was your first mental reaction as you saw hare Krishna. Try it you'll loveeee it. I do. I use to think they where a strange cult. but I know the truth. They know more than any other religion about how to Love God and what God looks like and what He does. I'd say it's about feeling threatened. We all like to live in our comfort zone. When something is confusing or not easy to comprehend, it creates some anxiety. The easiest strategy is to dismiss it. And this day and age, it is very easy to find others who will dismiss the same things. That puts you right back in your comfort zone and saves you all the bother of trying to actually learn something. Understanding, after all, doesn't mean acceptance. There are plenty of things I understand, but still don't agree with.

its natural for people to dismiss what can not be understood... and those that 'knock it' are just hiding behind silly comments etc... because they don't want people to know that they don't understand.

John Lydon sang it: "The ordinary will ignore whatever they cannot explain, as if nothing ever happens and everything remains the same..."
