If a whale in a pool of water farts, how will the level of water in the pool change?

Me thinks that if the whale was
resting on the bottom, the level
would go down. Unlikely scenario,
though, because mammals need
air.

In case the whale was resting on
the surface (means positive
buyoancy) the change of its mass
will be negligible (especially if
bouyancy in air also taken into
account) and the lavel of water
will remain unchanged.

the water level should go up, since the whale wouldn't be contracting any after it releases the gas (unless it was a really big one) but it would be adding a bubble into the pool which would displace water thereby making the level rise.

the whale's mass changing would not affect the water level unless its mass changed so drastically that the whale either sank right down or floated to the top.

if anything losing gas in water would make the whale sink more, thereby also causing the water level to rise.

It would go down, because the volume of the whale would go down after its flatulence. Therefore, after the gases have escaped into the atmosphere, the total volume of the whale and water would decrease. This would not be true only if the pre-flatulence gases were compressed inside the whale to a density higher than water.

Initially the fart will expand and will cause more water volume to be displaced, but when the fart escapes the whale would be less mass and so it would displace less water.
