I had Norton Antivirus and it has a built-in firewall/worm protector, it turned off my firewall as its own firewall was far superior to the windows firewall, it also had a program built into it to turn off the windows firewall notify message, so don't worry my firewall appeared to be switched off too, as the Nortons firewall/worm protector didn't show up in the security centre, but I was still protected

Perhaps the Norton Anti-Virus has a built in Firewall and that is why the Windows Firewall is turning off. When I turn on my software firewall, Comodo Firewall, it turns off the Windows Firewall automatically.

I have macafee and this will turn off my firewall unless I enable it. The macafee has its own built in firewall though so perhaps the norton does too. The antivirus will simply destroy the virus before it damages the computor whereas the firewall prevents is etting in, check if a firewall is included in the norton and if not check how you can keep your windows firewall running

You need a firewall of some description, if Norton has its own firewall, then it will probably disable the windows firewall by default, otherwise there maybe conflicts between them,.

You still need your windows firewall to protect your computer,
turning off windows firewall may make your computer more vulnerable to viruses and intruders, it might not be the best firewall but it is better then not having one at all. good luck.

A firewall performs a different task from anti-virus and anti-spyware and it should be running when you connect to the Internet.
