Look at RoadsideAmerica.com , they have lots of 'neat' stuff, like;

The World's Largest Ball Of Twine - Cawker City, Kansas.

The Geographic Center Of The United States (48) - Lebanon, Kansas.

The Corn Palace - Mitchell, South Dakota.

Wall Drug - Near Mt. Rushmore, South Dakota

The best thing about a lot of these states is the higher speed limits. You'll understand the value of that when you get there.

Iowa- in Des Moines the down town area is great. They have a brand new science center with an Imax, and there are lots of very cute returants in the new "east Village" Try spaghetti works, it's $10 all you can eat pasta, and the decor is great! It's in an old warehouse! http://www.downtowndesmoines.com/

Also just 20 min west of Des Moines is an amusement park called Adventureland- it's great. It has 3 BIG rollercoasters plus all the usual rides. It's like a smaller version of 6 flags, and costs ALOT less. http://www.adventureland-usa.com/

If you're going through in mid august check out the Iowa State Fair, it's the #1 fair in the nation, and the movie "state Fair" was based on it. http://www.iowastatefair.com/

I live in Wisconsin, you can go to Wisconsin Dells. Lots of fun there. It's near Madison.

The Shed Aquarium and the Science and Industry Museum in Chicago also.
