An opera is a story filled with grand emotion, and early radio shows used melodramatic scripts to entice people to listen by incorporating many emotional subjects and cliffhangers. Soap companies sponsored most of these stories and "soap opera' was coined.

In the early days of radio and tv, the companies that sponsored Soap Operas were "soap companies," as most of the viewers/listeners were females.

Because when they first started, on radio, they were totally aimed at housewives (still are) and were generally paid for by soap advertisers, because that's what house wives bought. Funny--still lots of soap (and other household items) advertise during those "daytime" shows.
