Plaid acrylics can be sanded with very fine grit starting at about 600 and ending with about 800 or 1000. The only problem is that you will risk sanding some important details as well.

If you do not mind repainting the kit, I would suggest stripping it entirely. This can be done by placing the contents in a Ziplock bag then spraying the contents liberally with oven cleaner. Press out all the air before sealing and leave over night. Some people have successfully used brake fluid as well.

Be sure to wash the kit with soap, water and an old toothbrush, allow to dry and apply an even coat of primer before applying paint.

Avoiding brush lines while hand painting is difficult. I found that thinning the paint to airbrush consistency (the consistency of whole milk )is the one of the best solutions. Having soft-bristled brushes are key as well.

You will have to work quickly, however, and make sure that the paint does not "pond" in areas of the model. The initial layer is the most difficult to apply; and it takes MANY such coats. Each coat has to completely dry to the touch before adding the next layer. Each succeeding layer becomes easier as well. This technique however, DOES NOT work with metallic paints.

As others have mentioned, an airbrush would be the best way to apply a nice, even coat -other than carefully using spray cans. I hope you can solve your problem.

P.S. There are other brands of paint that may be a bit more suitable for car models. Some people use Duplicolor -which is actually used to make minor repairs in actual automobiles

You can sand... but you will need to use VERY fine grades of wet-sandpaper. 600-1000 grit.

I don't "brush" anymore as I have three airbrushes, but I do alot of sanding after filling gaps with putty.

I've never tried the "Plaid" brand, but I wish you luck.

There is super fine sandpaper for this. Yoou would paint another coat over that. I haven't tried it yet but I will this fall when I make my first ever model car.
