Mariners use a 32-point compass, each point being 11.25 degrees apart. (A complete circle is 360 degrees).
Going clockwise from North, the four cardinal directions are North, East, South, and West.
Between these are the secondary points Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, and Northwest.
The eight tertiary points are north-northeast, east-northeast, east-southeast, south-southeast, south-southwest, west-southwest, west-northwest, and north-northwest.
There are sixteen final points: north by east, northeast by north, northeast by east, east by north, east by south, southeast by east, southeast by south, south by east, south by west, southwest by south, southwest by west, west by south, west by north, northwest by west, northwest by north, and north by west.
Note that, in spite of Alfred Hitchcock's famous movie, there is NO "north by northwest"!
Putting them all together, the 32 points all around the compass are:
NORTH
north by east
north-northeast
northeast by north
northeast
northeast by east
east-northeast
east by north
EAST
east by south
east-southeast
southeast by east
southeast
southeast by south
south-southeast
south by east
SOUTH
south by west
south-southwest
southwest by south
southwest
southwest by west
west-southwest
west by south
WEST
west by north
west-northwest
northwest by west
northwest
northwest by north
north-northwest
north by west
... and back to NORTH again.
