Now remember, I don't mean like going to the beach or going into 4 foot deep water, I mean being in the open waters in the middle of the ocean where the water can go miles down. It just scares the crap out of me! mostly because of all the things that might be there, knowing my luck, I would turn around and be surrounded by some giant squid, giant octopus, or 20 sharks. Do open waters scare anyone else?

it is scary if you get out and start swimming, depends which sea you are in.I went to Ko Chang (thailand) a year ago and went for a swim,i knew already there are no sharks there and nothing that could really hurt me(people said no jellyfish),so i swam quite far out.I do alot of swimming and was further out than anyone but thought it ok.Then i felt something go across my neck,it WAS a jellyfish and i swam back in quickly.I didnt know if was going to paralyze me or what.It hurt like hell for 2 days.i put white wine vinegar on it for one day which helped.so much for peoples knowledge of what is out there.I won't go swimming far out again.Live and learn, live and learn.

yeah they scare. me but with any fear that i have it helps alot if alot of ppl are around u. like, lets say ur afraid of roller coasters and u decide to go on a big one cuz every1 else want to go on ull prolly still be afraid but its really good to know ur best buds r with u at that time. im not too afraid but open what is a tad frightning and im talking like in the middle of the atlantic where it goes down for miles and miles. full of whales and sharks and other creatures that can kill u if ur out by ur self. that personally is what scares me. that and the fear of me on a capsizing boat on the water.

yes, you think exactly like me. Being out there knowing nothing is below you more miles. All that deep, dark water...all those creatures swimming below you. Imagine being on a small row boat out there, and you look over the edge and see a gray whale's back right below you. Giant animals are freaky.

I'm not scared of it, but I like civilization and being able to do normal things, not all of which one can do out in the middle of the ocean. And, since I am a land creature, I prefer land, it's just my nature, but I love to go swimming.

The creatures in the water are the least of your worries. The ocean should be feared/respected because the water itself is the most dangerous entity to our tiny, warm blooded bodies. You can drown, die from hypothermia, die of dehydration or be crushed by its mass. I don't have a phobia of open water but a healthy respect of the danger that it represents.

heck yes! just when i'm surfing in 8 foot water i'm afraid of a shark jumping out biting me, because i never know what's under me. i couldn't imagine how frightened i would be if i was stuck in the wide open ocean only on a small board!

yeah me too. It seems the vast unknown is what scares most humans. I would freak out for sure. I think it's because you can't see nothing ahead of you or below you. I think the -below- part is what scares me most.
